Fashion Weeks: Liberty's 2026 beauty advent calendar, starring Helena Bonham Carter, is its biggest campaign yet

Liberty has appointed actress Helena Bonham Carter as the fictional 'Head of the Extraordinary' for its 2026 beauty advent calendar launch. This marks the retailer's largest campaign to date for the annual product.

A short film released on September 2 features Bonham Carter behind the scenes at the 150-year-old department store. In her campaign role, she searches for products deemed worthy of inclusion in this year's calendar. The creative aims to promote Liberty's buying expertise and founder relationships.

The activity extends across social media, gifting, and an in-person event. It positions the beauty advent calendar as a wider expression of the retailer's approach to discovery and curation.

Founder involvement

For the first time, beauty founders are active participants in Liberty's Beauty Advent campaign. Bobbi Brown and Lisa Eldridge feature alongside Bonham Carter. Violette Serrat is also part of the campaign, bringing the people behind selected brands into the storytelling.

Liberty stated this approach would give customers greater access to the personalities and ethos behind its beauty edit. The retailer is also leveraging its Tudor flagship store and Beauty Buying team to showcase why products earned a place.

Laura Simpson, CMO at Liberty and Managing Director of its LBTY beauty proposition, explained the rationale. "We wanted to bring those personalities forward and give our community greater access to the world behind one of our biggest annual launches," she said.

Campaign mechanics

Ahead of the launch, Liberty sent limited-edition digital cameras to select members of its community. These recipients received invitations from Bonham Carter's campaign character. They were encouraged to document the activity from their own perspectives, creating material for the wider social media rollout.

The campaign launches as brands and retailers intensify efforts to capture early festive demand. Competitors in the 2026 advent calendar market include Harrods, Space NK, John Lewis, and Fortnum & Mason, alongside calendars from leading beauty brands and specialist retailers.
