Dr Sam Bunting has published her first book. Titled 'FLAWLESS: Your Ultimate Guide to Bright, Clear Skin', the 192-page guide is out today, according to an interview with TheIndustry.beauty. The cosmetic dermatologist, who opened her Harley Street clinic in 2010 and launched the Dr Sam’s skincare brand in 2018, stated the book is built on the same practical, evidence-based philosophy that defines her practice.

Bunting explained the book shows readers how to find the right ingredients, in the right combination, at the right concentration. She described it as a natural extension of her work, aimed at making rigorous skin science genuinely accessible.

From Acne to Authority

Beauty was not an early focus for Bunting. Growing up in Donaghadee in Northern Ireland, she was a science student headed for Cambridge University to study medicine. Her perspective shifted after she began reading American Vogue and noticed US dermatologists like Doris Day and Lisa Erin building careers focused on creating beautiful skin, not only treating disease. That distinction lodged itself in her brain.

Her own experience with acne as a junior doctor made the issue personal. When she started her own practice, she was inundated with women in a similar position: adults wanting to address early signs of ageing but unable to use most market products due to breakouts. She called this a real failure of the industry. "Beauty appeals to me because, at its best, it isn't frivolous - it's genuinely life-changing," Bunting told TheIndustry.beauty. She has watched people shrink due to treatable skin concerns and finds the subsequent transformation never gets old.

An Unconventional First Beauty Job

Bunting considers her first TV presenting role as her first job in beauty. She presented 'Extreme Beauty Disasters' on TLC. For a shy girl from Northern Ireland, she described the experience as almost therapeutic. Being put in front of a camera repeatedly accelerated her process of overcoming public speaking anxiety.

She said learning to communicate clearly and naturally on camera is a skill that has served her ever since. It proved useful in the clinic, on YouTube, across social media, and in building her brand. Bunting does not believe she would be half as effective without that early experience.

Building a Brand on Trust and Edit

Her early television work provided business lessons. Seeing how brands operated from the inside taught her that how you do one thing in business is how you do everything. She was impressed by brands that were ruthlessly consistent and careful. Others spent money on the wrong things and overcomplicated the customer experience.

The deeper lesson was about trust. Bunting stated that what patients valued most was not the breadth of offerings but the edit. She explained, "'I've done the thinking for you. You don't need to worry about ingredients or research. Here's exactly what to do.'" That level of explicitness, she said, was what got results. She took that principle directly into her brand.

The Next Chapter: Retail and International Growth

The current focus for Dr Sam Bunting is on broadening retail footprint and pushing internationally. She believes her brand can become the most trusted doctor brand in the world. Sephora served as a strong retail launch platform. The brand is now also in Space NK across 54 stores.

Bunting also revealed the person in beauty she has always admired is Marcia Kilgore. She praised the serial founder of Bliss Spa, Soap & Glory, FitFlop and Beauty Pie for her ability to spot where convention fails the consumer and fix it across different businesses. She doesn't do things the way they've always been done. She asks whether they need to be done that way at all, Bunting said. She admired Kilgore enough to bid at a charity auction for half an hour of her time.

Reflecting on her career path, Bunting advised her younger self to never underestimate herself. She delayed starting her business because she thought she needed a partner who 'knew business'. She learned you can work things out as you go. The confidence from solving problems compounds over time. Her final counsel was, You're never fully ready. Start anyway.
